(Doctor Who)Language and Representation: blog tasks

 Language and contexts

1) Write a summary of the notes from our in-class analysis of the episode. You can use your own notes from the screening in class and we'll also post a Google document of class notes too (you'll need your GHS Google login).

Camerawork and sound:There were different shots of the all the different scenes we watched and this would show the characters facial expression or gesture.

Mise-en-scene:There were different settings and the first was in the school when the teachers were talking about Susan. Then the next setting was in a junk yard because the teachers went searching for Susan. Then it was in the tardis where Ian and Barbara found while walking around the telephone box.At the end they time travelled to a new planet or timeline.

Narrative and genre:The genre keeps changing in every scene

2) How can we apply narrative theories to this episode of  Doctor Who

Todorov's Equilibrium:The Doctor in this episode acted like the villan instead of the hero.

Propp's character theory
Barthes's enigma and action codes:The teachers have decided to go look for the Doctors grand child and this action to took them to a different way for them

Levi-Strauss's binary opposition: The Doctor was a villan because he attacked one of the teachers which showed he did want anyone in the tardis and would do anything to get rid of them

3) In your opinion, what is the most important scene in the episode and why?

-The most important scene is when the the teachers were talking to the The Doctor and they discovered about the telephone booth;which was the tardis.

4) What genre is An Unearthly Child and how can you tell? Make specific reference to aspects of the episode.

The genre is fantasy because unearthly means alien child and there no thing in real life such as a alien

5) How does An Unearthly Child reflect the social and historical contexts of the 1960s?

This would make the people in 1960s think that alien are real a recently for them a astronaut went to space.

Representations

1) What stereotypes of men are reinforced and subverted in Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child? How?

The men would fight as the women would just watch and then the male teacher was on the floor as the female one was sitting somewhere.

2) What stereotypes of women/girls are reinforced and subverted in Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child? How?

The women would not talk much and then the men would discover more than them.

3) How do the representations of young people and old people in An Unearthly Child reflect the social and historical context of the 1960s?

The young child was smarter than the teacher which shows that they had more power and this would be confusing in 1960s because the elder people were smarter

4) What representations of race/ethnicity can be found in Doctor Who: An Earthly Child? Is this surprising or not? Give reasons for your answer and consider historical / cultural context (the 1960s). Has this changed in more recent series of Doctor Who?

The most race you can see is white because back then they would not trust other etcnicities to be on set as t looked bad for them.

5) How is social class represented in An Unearthly Child? Think about how education and knowledge is presented in the episode.

The child had more knowledge than someone average of their age which would confuse them. because there could not be another people smarter then them.
